Who we are

The national organization of young speakers, learners, and advocates of Esperanto in the Philippines

We are an organization made by the youth for the youth.

Founded by three high-schoolers in Valenzuela City on September 19, 2013, Philippine Esperanto Youth (Filipina Esperanto-Junularo, FEJ) is a non-profit, non-partisan educational organization. A full member organization of the World Esperanto Youth Organization (TEJO) since January 2017, we are one of the few youth-based national organizations consistently campaigning for Esperanto in the Asia-Pacific region.

A long history of Esperanto in the Philippines

Prior to the establishment of Philippine Esperanto Youth, the Esperanto community in the country had never been consistently active, with small known groups of speakers, mostly informally organized, in 1907-1911, in the 1930s, the 1970s, the 1990s, and 2006-2010.

According to few existing records, Esperanto first appeared in the Philippines in 1907, having been brought by the Americans who settled in the archipelago, then a colony of the United States. The first Esperanto organization was the Philippines Esperanto Association, which existed from 1907 until 1909.

In 2006, thanks to the efforts of the Asian Commission of the Universal Esperanto Association (UEA), Bharat Ghimire, a teacher from Nepal, traveled to the Philippines to teach Esperanto in a few universities in Metro Manila. His efforts culminated with the organization of the first Philippine Esperanto Congress, which saw the establishment of the Esperanto Association for the Philippines. However, the organization did not last long and was almost completely disbanded by 2010.

Today, Esperanto remains largely unknown among Filipinos, although the existence of Philippine Esperanto Youth has kept the Philippines on the map of the global Esperanto community for the past decade.

Our principal objectives

We do our day-to-day work towards the following principal objectives:

  • to promote educated awareness on Esperanto to Filipinos;
  • to allow Esperanto speakers to further learn the language and develop their interest and understanding of Esperanto culture and movement;
  • to encourage our members to actively participate in the Esperanto movement and build the capabilities and experience;
  • to contribute to the worldwide Esperanto community and culture; and
  • to fulfill the needs of our members, represent them before all relevant institutions, and protect their general interests and common rights.

Membership

In 2020, the National Assembly (the highest policy-making body) formally approved the organization's current Constitution, which allows individuals 15 to 35 years of age to freely join as Regular Members and enjoy a wide range of rights. Young people aged 14 and below may become Associate Members while individuals aged 36 and above may become Supporting Members, but neither category may vote or run for office.

Membership is open to all Filipino citizens at home and abroad and to foreign residents living in the Philippines. There is no minimum level of Esperanto required to join the organization, although members are encouraged to actively learn the language and participate in the organization's activities.

Our activities and services

 In our more than 10 years of activity, our national network of members and volunteers regularly organize the following initiatives:

  • monthly meetups for language practice and mentorship;
  • educational and social meetings (physical, online, or hybrid):
  • cultural exchange opportunities with Esperanto speakers overseas;
  • introductory courses and orientation sessions (for those new to Esperanto and would like to learn its basics);
  • special meetups and tours (organized for foreign Esperanto speakers visiting the Philippines);
  • training and capacity-building seminars (with trainers accredited by the World Esperanto Youth Organization);
  • visiting lecture sessions in universities, schools, and other organizations*; and
  • online recruitment campaigns.

*If you wish for Philippine Esperanto Youth to visit your school to arrange a lecture or a course, please contact us.

Support our movement

Your support helps us continue to expand our campaign to promote active use of Esperanto in the Philippines as well as provide long-lasting development opportunities for our members and volunteers. Here are many ways to support us:

  1. Becoming an associate, regular, or supporting member. As a member, you enoy a wide range of rights and privileges as well as exclusive access to some of our events and materials.
  2. Donating to our fund. We are a non-profit organization, but we need funds to keep our operations running. Your donation has allowed us to set up this website, send our members to international Esperanto events, and procure books and other learning materials for our courses.
  3. Donating materials and merchandise. Alternatively, you can also donate books, learning materials, and office supplies to expand our operations.
  4. Sending partnership proposals. If you represent another organization or company, feel free to send us any proposals for collaboration!
  5. Spreading the word. It would be awesome if more and more Filipinos knew about Esperanto. Tell them about this wonderful language!
