We are an organization made by the youth for the youth.
Founded by three high-schoolers in Valenzuela City on September 19, 2013, Philippine Esperanto Youth (Filipina Esperanto-Junularo, FEJ) is a non-profit, non-partisan educational organization. A full member organization of the World Esperanto Youth Organization (TEJO) since January 2017, we are one of the few youth-based national organizations consistently campaigning for Esperanto in the Asia-Pacific region.
Prior to the establishment of Philippine Esperanto Youth, the Esperanto community in the country had never been consistently active, with small known groups of speakers, mostly informally organized, in 1907-1911, in the 1930s, the 1970s, the 1990s, and 2006-2010.
According to few existing records, Esperanto first appeared in the Philippines in 1907, having been brought by the Americans who settled in the archipelago, then a colony of the United States. The first Esperanto organization was the Philippines Esperanto Association, which existed from 1907 until 1909.
In 2006, thanks to the efforts of the Asian Commission of the Universal Esperanto Association (UEA), Bharat Ghimire, a teacher from Nepal, traveled to the Philippines to teach Esperanto in a few universities in Metro Manila. His efforts culminated with the organization of the first Philippine Esperanto Congress, which saw the establishment of the Esperanto Association for the Philippines. However, the organization did not last long and was almost completely disbanded by 2010.
Today, Esperanto remains largely unknown among Filipinos, although the existence of Philippine Esperanto Youth has kept the Philippines on the map of the global Esperanto community for the past decade.
We do our day-to-day work towards the following principal objectives:
In 2020, the National Assembly (the highest policy-making body) formally approved the organization's current Constitution, which allows individuals 15 to 35 years of age to freely join as Regular Members and enjoy a wide range of rights. Young people aged 14 and below may become Associate Members while individuals aged 36 and above may become Supporting Members, but neither category may vote or run for office.
Membership is open to all Filipino citizens at home and abroad and to foreign residents living in the Philippines. There is no minimum level of Esperanto required to join the organization, although members are encouraged to actively learn the language and participate in the organization's activities.
In our more than 10 years of activity, our national network of members and volunteers regularly organize the following initiatives:
